Raila Odinga Weighs In on Matiang’i’s Presidential Ambitions: Why Kisii Votes Won’t Be Enough

In a statement that has sparked discussions across Kenya, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has downplayed the presidential ambitions of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, arguing that a candidate cannot win solely on support from Kisii County, or any single community. Speaking after a consultative meeting with Kisii residents, Raila pointed out that to clinch the presidency, a candidate needs widespread backing from across the nation.
“Someone running for the presidency cannot be elected based on Kisii votes, Luo votes, Luhya votes, or even Mount Kenya votes,” Raila explained. “There’s nothing like a community producing a candidate. If you want to be elected, you will be elected by Kenyans generally.”
Odinga also emphasized that, despite rumors about Matiang’i’s political future, he has not heard directly from the former CS about his intentions to run for president. “This is something we will deal with when the right time comes,” Odinga commented, clarifying that the speculation around Matiang’i’s bid was premature.
Raila further criticized the current administration, highlighting key issues like the malfunctioning Social Health Authority and government inattention to critical challenges, including corruption.
As the political landscape shifts, many are speculating that Odinga might align with President William Ruto in a surprising power deal. Stay tuned for updates as Raila is expected to make his next political move as early as March 7.
