Violence has erupted once again at the Kisii and Trans Mara border, leaving at least two people dead and several others injured in what are believed to be retaliatory clashes over alleged cattle theft. The ongoing unrest, which has ignited tensions between communities in Kisii County and Narok County, has prompted urgent calls for action from both former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
The clashes, which have escalated along the Trans Mara West-Bomachoge Borabu border, have led to loss of lives, destruction of property, and a growing fear of further violence. In an official statement, the NCIC condemned the violence and called for an immediate halt to the hostilities. The commission also emphasized the need for dialogue and collaboration between local leadership, security agencies, and community representatives to restore peace in the region.
“As stewards of peace and cohesion in Kenya, we are deeply concerned by the ongoing clashes in Trans Mara and Kisii,” the NCIC statement read. “We strongly condemn the violence and call for the immediate cessation of hostilities.”
The commission warned against incitement to violence, reminding the public that hate speech and orchestrating clashes are criminal offenses. Perpetrators of the violence are facing swift legal action.
Raila Odinga, responding to the escalating violence, urged authorities to strengthen security in the area to prevent further casualties. “I have spoken to the relevant authorities and mobilized security to ensure that no further loss of life occurs and to bring peace among the communities along the border,” Raila said.
The long-standing conflict, fueled by recurring livestock disputes, has seen rival groups clashing with traditional weapons like bows and arrows. Tragically, two individuals have succumbed to injuries sustained in the violence while being treated in health facilities in Kilgoris town.
The NCIC, in partnership with local leaders and security agencies, has dispatched a team to the affected areas to facilitate dialogue and peacebuilding efforts. As the situation remains tense, both the NCIC and Raila Odinga are committed to ensuring that peace prevails, urging all parties to avoid further escalation.
