On Monday, President William Ruto officially launched the Nairobi River Regeneration and Engineering Works Programme, a transformative project set to cost KSh 50 billion. The initiative aims to create 40,000 new jobs, expanding on the 22,000 positions currently supported by the Climate Works Mtaani Initiative. The project will also see the construction of a 60km sewer line and 50,000 affordable homes in newly reclaimed areas. During the launch, President Ruto emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment for both Nairobi’s residents and visitors.

Describing the initiative as a life-changing endeavor, the President highlighted its potential to improve living conditions, foster sustainable transport, and provide economic opportunities for thousands of people.

“The right decisions are crucial for Kenya’s progress,” said President Ruto. “I assure Kenyans that in the next 24 months, we will witness significant improvements along the Nairobi River.”

His remarks came during the groundbreaking ceremony for social housing and related infrastructure in Kamukunji Constituency, Nairobi, where the project will transform the area. The Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Project will include affordable housing, modern marketplaces, and improved infrastructure, ultimately creating a more livable and economically dynamic city.

The initiative, which extends to Kiambu, Machakos, Kajiado, and Murang’a counties, will focus on river rehabilitation, flood control, waste management, and the expansion of sewer systems to improve public health and urban resilience.

President Ruto also called for national unity, stressing its importance for the country’s prosperity. “I have chosen to work with leaders like former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to promote unity and prosperity for all Kenyans,” he stated.

Earlier, while touring ongoing development projects in Kamukunji, the President praised the collaboration between the National Government and Nairobi County Government. He also commended the county’s investment in Desert Grounds, a modern recreational facility in California that will support leisure, talent development, and social interaction, contributing to the nation’s economic and social growth.

At Zawadi Comprehensive Primary School, President Ruto announced an expansion of the school feeding program across Kenya, particularly targeting informal settlements and marginalized regions. The program aims to boost enrollment and improve academic performance.

The President also visited the ongoing construction of the 4,566-unit Shauri Moyo B Affordable Housing Project in Makadara Constituency. He reiterated that upgrading Nairobi, as the nation’s capital and a key hub for the United Nations in the Global South, is essential for the country’s modernization.

“Our Affordable Housing Programme offers a chance to eliminate informal settlements and provide millions of Nairobi residents with dignified living,” President Ruto explained.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki highlighted that the Nairobi River Regeneration project would ensure the city’s rivers are cleaned, and its sewerage system is improved to safeguard residents from contamination and flood-related disruptions.

“This initiative is a massive step toward cleaning Nairobi’s rivers and improving the sewage system to protect the people from contamination and floods,” said Prof. Kindiki. He also urged all Kenyans to unite for the country’s development, echoing the President’s message of inclusivity.

Cabinet Secretaries Alice Wahome (Lands and Housing), Aden Duale (Environment), and Soipan Tuya (Defence), along with Governors Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi), Joseph ole Lenku (Kajiado), and Ahmed Abdullahi (Wajir), Nairobi Rivers Commission Chairperson Margaret Wanjiru, and Members of Parliament were present at the event.

The Nairobi Rivers Commission, along with the Ministries of Housing, Environment, and Defence, will jointly oversee the implementation of the project.
