NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 12 – The National Assembly is set to vote in new leadership for its sessional and departmental committees.
One of the key committees under scrutiny is the Budget and Appropriations Committee, which faced attention during the session on Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
ODM MPs are expected to take leadership of several important committees, including Labour, Budget and Appropriations, Regional Integration, Health, and Trade.
Allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have been removed from leadership positions in several key committees, marking a shift aimed at strengthening the political alliance between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Among those affected by the reshuffle is Githunguri MP Muthoni Wamuchomba, who has been removed as chair of the Constitution Implementation Committee. Additionally, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya has lost his position as chair of the Trade Committee.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula underscored that committees are the core of parliamentary operations and stressed that Members who demonstrate dedication, competence, and accountability would be prioritized in the new committee leadership structure.
He urged Members to take their Committee roles seriously, emphasizing that the success of the House depends largely on the commitment and performance of its committees in executing their duties.
Wetang’ula further stated that the reconstitution process would focus on fairness, inclusivity, and ensuring that the expertise and contributions of individual members are maximized to enhance the productivity of the House.
The reshuffle also impacts sessional committees such as the House Business Committee (HBC), Powers and Privileges Committee, Procedure and House Rules Committee, and Members Services and Facilities Committee.
Other committees affected by the leadership changes include the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Budget and Appropriations Committee, Public Debt and Privatization Committee, Public Petitions Committee, Committee on Implementation, Committee on Delegated Legislation, Regional Integration Committee, and the National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity Committee, among others.
