The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has announced that the university application portal will open next week.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Agnes Wahome, shared this update during an interview with Nation on Wednesday, March 19. She confirmed that all students who are qualified to join university and have applied will be placed accordingly.

According to Wahome, the placement service has already received the approved student capacities from universities, allowing qualified candidates to begin their applications

“This week, we received the approved capacities from universities. They have declared a capacity of about 300,000, which is more than the number of students who qualified for admission,” Wahome stated.

Wahome also clarified that while 246,391 candidates qualified for university slots, KUCCPS will only place students who apply for placement.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba supported Wahome’s statement, informing the Education Committee in the National Assembly that the university application portal would open before the end of March.

Ogamba, speaking to legislators on Wednesday, March 19, explained that the delay in opening the portal was due to a court ruling that had halted the new university funding model

“We agreed that by the end of this month, the portals would be open for university students. We are now addressing what should happen next and handling related issues,” Ogamba told the MPs.

This update comes a month after KUCCPS launched a portal for course applications to the Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTC) for 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates.

KUCCPS CEO Agnes Wahome had earlier explained, during a meeting with education stakeholders on January 25, that the placement service had introduced a phased application process for the first time. This was to allow students enrolling for the March intake to apply on time.

She added that once KMTC applications were concluded, the portal would then open for Teacher Training Colleges (TTC) before finally opening for university applications.

“Universities and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) typically have their intakes later in the year, while KMTC and TVET institutions admit students in January, March, and May. This phased application process ensures students transition smoothly into their respective colleges,” Wahome explained.
