President William Ruto began his tour of the Mt. Kenya region on Tuesday, April 1, amidst rising political tensions. Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, welcomed the president’s visit, expressing gratitude for the allocation of over KSh 850 million for development projects in the county.

Speaking in Kieni, Nyeri, Kahiga thanked Ruto for his commitment to improving the region’s infrastructure and healthcare services. “We welcome you to Kieni, and we are grateful for the KSh 850 million you’ve brought, which will address many of the pressing needs of our people. This region has long lagged behind in development,” Kahiga said.

The governor acknowledged the financial challenges faced by county governments, particularly in road construction and maintenance. He expressed appreciation for Ruto’s intervention, particularly in upgrading healthcare facilities. “The funds allocated to county governments are often insufficient, and I have struggled with road projects. We are grateful for your commitment to upgrading the Naromoru hospital and providing the necessary medical equipment,” he added.

Kahiga reiterated his strong support for Ruto’s leadership, urging him to continue visiting Nyeri and implementing development projects. “We thank you for the development you’ve brought, and we want you to visit us more often. Ignore those who say you shouldn’t come to Nyeri,” he emphasized.

Political Tensions Within Gachagua’s Camp

Kahiga’s remarks come amid growing divisions within Rigathi Gachagua’s political camp. Some of his allies have expressed differing views on how to engage with Ruto ahead of the 2027 elections. The internal dissent is weakening Gachagua’s efforts to rally opposition against Ruto, with key figures such as activist George Morara and MP Gathoni Wamuchomba calling for a more inclusive approach. Tensions escalated further when Morara Kebaso’s Inject Party severed ties with Gachagua’s faction, accusing him of promoting tribal politics.
